Patricia (Patty) Summers is Founder, President and CEO of Youngstown Blue Coats (YBC). YBC is a 501c(3) non-profit organization founded in 2017 with a mission to prevent freezing and injury to homeless and financially destitute individuals. Based on her long-time experience working with homeless, Patty saw the need for a nonprofit which actively served area homeless individuals, including identifying where they live and caring for and assisting them, outdoors where they live, especially during harsh Midwest winters. YBC’s mission is straightforward, “In America, nobody should freeze to death.” Patty and her team, all unpaid volunteers, collect and, during winter, distribute warming items (coats, boots, socks, gloves, hats, scarves, sleeping bags, ground mats, tents, and more) to homeless individuals in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. She advocates for those who need assistance of any kind, health-related and otherwise, and she and her team work with numerous, diverse area agencies to provide each individual YBC encounters the resources that person needs. Patty and her team are all unpaid volunteers; YBC depends entirely on volunteers. This ensures all donations (cash and non-cash) benefit the homeless directly. In 2024, Patty received the “Jenco Award” from Foundation for Appalachian Ohio for making a profound “…difference in her community, and beyond, through her community service and visionary leadership.” She has been a nominee for the prestigious “Athena Award” from the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber (2024, 2025).
