Leadership Mahoning Valley will present its On Board! Board Training Workshop on Thursday, August 14 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at The Grand Resort, 9519 East Market Street in Warren.
Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors and what it takes to be an effective nonprofit board member. Topics will include foundational best practices in nonprofit governance. The training will provide participants with an understanding of the sector, the basic tenets of governance, and their individual roles and responsibilities as nonprofit leaders. The On Board! Board Training Program is a powerful resource for those wishing to enhance their understanding of their duty to their organization, the nonprofit sector and the community.
Beth Short, Director of Charitable Outreach and Education for the Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Law Section will be the guest presenter. Short has spent her career working for and with nonprofit organizations. Her passion for the nonprofit sector is evidenced by her professional and volunteer background working with charities as a staff member, board member, consultant, and volunteer for large and small organizations. She brings a background in journalism, legislative and public affairs and training, complemented by a master’s in business that focused on nonprofit management issues. Her work in the Charitable Law Section focuses on the development of strategies aimed at strengthening the nonprofit sector. She is a graduate of the Ohio State University and Ohio University and serves as president-elect of the National Association of State Charity Officials.
The Leadership Mahoning Valley On Board! Board Training and Governance Academy is designed for both new and established board members and/or nonprofit leadership and will include content from Charitable University, a new learning platform developed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, which provides tools on some of the most important elements in leading a charitable organization: board governance, governmental filings, financial operations and internal controls, filings and recordkeeping and fundraising. Charitable board members, staff and volunteers need to understand the legal obligations that are intended to protect charitable assets and those who rely on the critical services provided by the nonprofit sector.
Participants who complete the day-long training program will be included in the new Leadership Mahoning Valley BoardMatch program which will connect individuals interested in serving on boards, with non-profit organizations in need of board members. Charitable leaders who complete the training will also receive completion credit for the program and their names listed on the Attorney General’s web page as acknowledgement of their commitment to learning about their important roles as sector leaders. They will also receive a completion certificate that can be shared with funders to illustrate their organization’s commitment to sound board governance practices.
The day will begin with registration, a continental breakfast and networking at 8:00 a.m., followed by the program which will take place from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Lunch is included. Reservations are required and the cost to attend is $60 per person. Groups of six may
